History of Jacksonville, FL
This guide was created by Links Locksmith Services in Jacksonville FL, a Locksmith Jacksonville FL, to help our customers and clients learn more about the local area. During the time of the discovery of the New World, Jacksonville, Florida was inhabited by the Mocama, a subgroup of the Timucua people. In 1562, Jean Ribault, a French Huguenot explorer, explored along the St. John’s River and claimed the land for France. Subsequently, the French settlement of Fort Caroline developed. Unfortunately for the French, the Spanish had already established a Catholic colony in St. Augustine and did not take kindly to the incursion of the French on Florida’s land. In an effort to protect Spanish claims, Philip II, King of Spain, ordered Pedro Menéndez de Avilés to attack Fort Caroline. The French settlement was annihilated and Spain once again gained full control of the Florida territory.
In 1763, Spain ceded Florida to Great Britain after its victory over France in the Seven Years’ War, or as we know it, the French and Indian War. To connect St. Augustine to the existing British colony of Georgia, the British built the King’s Road, which crossed a narrow point of the St. John’s River, called the Cow Ford. Thus, the future Jacksonville was born. Unfortunately for Great Britain, the colonists grew tired of British rule and declared independence in 1776. When the British lost the American Revolutionary War, they returned Florida to Spain, and Cow Ford continued to grow and thrive.
During the First Seminole War, the Florida border was unprotected and there were numerous alleged raids by Seminoles living in Florida into Georgia and citizens of the United States became outraged at the number of slaves who were escaping to Florida to find freedom. Spain decided that Florida was no longer worth the effort and gave Florida to the United States as part of the Adams-Onís Treaty. It was at this point, that settlers along the north side of Cow Ford decided to plan a town, which they named Jacksonville after President Andrew Jackson.
Jacksonville was a key supply point for the Confederate forces during the American Civil War and changed hands between the Union and the Confederacy several times during the war. In the years following the Civil War, Jacksonville, along with St. Augustine, became a popular winter destination for the wealthy. Today, Jacksonville is home to two U.S. Naval installations – Mayport Naval Station and Naval Station Jacksonville. Jacksonville is also the home of the Jacksonville Jaguars, the Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp, the Jacksonville Giants, the Jacksonville Armada, the Jacksonville Icemen, and the Jacksonville Sharks. Jacksonville is a continuously growing community, with a strong history and charm to attract future growth.
